Zia Soares

Born in Bié, Angola, 1972, lives and works in Lisbon.


Zia Soares is an actress, staging director and artistic director of the GRIOT Theater.

Graduated in Philosophy at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and attended the master's degree in School of Social Sciences and Humanities at NOVA University of Lisbon – (NOVA FCSH). At the beginning of her artistic career she studied ballet and percussion with the National Ballet Company of Guinea Bissau, circus arts with the Amsterdam Balloon Company, theater with the Theater Company "Os Sátyros", São Paulo, Brazil and is one of the founding actresses of Teatro Praga, where she worked from 1994 to 2000, as director, staging director and actress. In 2018 and 2019 created and directed the first performances produced and performed by black women in Portugal - "Gestuário I", an INMUNE (Instituto da Mulher Negra em Portugal) production; and “Gestuário II", an INMUNE/ BoCA-Biennial of Contemporary Arts co-production. In cinema he has worked with Pocas Pascoal, João Botelho, Pedro Filipe Marques, Uli Decker and Romano Casselis. She collaborates in projects of the visual artists Kiluanji Kia Henda, Mónica de Miranda and Neusa Trovoada. Zia Soares is an artist supported by apap – Feminist Futures, a project co-funded by the Creative Europe Program of the European Union.
