Malebona Maphtuse

Born in Johannesburgin 1994, lives in Johannesburg.

Malebona Maphutse, as an individual artist and a former member of the influential young collective Title in Transgression (with Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Dineo Diphofa, and Boitumelo Motau) evokes writer and artist Grada Kilomba’s sentiment that, ‘everything is transgressed, and I think this rebellion is part of a process in which one tries to decolonise arts, decolonise the white cube and especially decolonise knowledge’.

Her digital collages and installations appropriate the visuals and language of street flyers, bitingly exploring the historical debt due to systematic oppression. Her work seeks to investigate how bodies transcend mere existence and encounter space, in order to understand the politics of space. Her inspiration lies at the zenith of infinite but probable options that can be drawn from these spaces. Through this form of investigation She has gone on to explore a number of questions and situations that surround bodies. She is focussed on the ritual and spiritual engagements that form in spaces to inform a number of politics and sorts to divulge into these in order to create time-landscapes. Malebona has begun to intertwine these politics in order to emphasise and rethink ways in which these bodies exist within, but are not limited to, a South African context. Her collaborative work within Title in Transgression similarly sought to creatively address frustrations with lived experiences implicated by the status quo. Established partially to confront some of the ideological issues arising out of #FeesMustFall, the group created print-related works such as T-shirts bearing declarations such as ‘Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense’, and have staged various non-traditional interactions. They recently participated in I’m Not Who You Think I’m Not, the public programme at the Berlin Biennale in collaboration with TransAction Study Group from Stockholm, addressing issues of political resistance, historiography, and transnational aid. Malebona is currently in residency at The Bag Factory Artist Studio’s in preparation of her first solo show.
