António Ramalho (Barcelos, 1969) is the son of Júlia Ramalho and great-grandson of Rosa Ramalho, and began playing with clay as a child. Born into one of the best-known clay figurative families in Portugal, it's not surprising that his great-grandmother's and mother's heritage is a constant presence in his figures, either through the use of elements and motifs that they already used, or through the conscious desire to move away from that heritage, seeking to develop a unique line. It was in 2004 that António Ramalho began to devote himself exclusively to figurative production, dividing his work between helping to produce his mother's pieces and designing and making his own. Experiments with glazes in shades of green and the use of the fantastic universe, populated by bizarre creatures, are some of the characteristics of his work, which he himself no longer considers to be folk art.
